Check out the Flake Process!

Owner of Squatch Epoxy, Logan Doud, takes you through a short video of our Epoxy and Polyaspartic flake process from start to finish!

OUR FLAKE PROCESS

1) Surface Prep

The Purpose of Grinding

The primary goal of grinding is to achieve a specific Concrete Surface Profile (CSP), which is a standardized measurement of the concrete's texture or roughness. For most epoxy applications, you'll want to achieve a CSP of 2-3.

This process does three important things:

  • It removes contaminants: Grinding strips away dirt, old sealers, paint, adhesives, and any other substances that could prevent the epoxy from bonding directly to the concrete.
  • It removes laitance: This is a weak, chalky layer of cement and fine particles that rises to the surface during the curing process. It must be removed because it's too soft to support the epoxy coating.
  • It opens the pores: Grinding opens the pores of the concrete, giving the epoxy a porous surface to soak into. The physical texture created by the grinder gives the epoxy a "tooth" to grab onto, ensuring a strong mechanical bond.

2) Epoxy Basecoat and Broadcast flake

3) Scrape Flake and install Poly Top coat

We scrape excess flakes and ensure none are sticking up from broadcast. We then install our Polyaspartic topcoat to lock the system together, to provide unmatched durability, and to provide a UV stable finish.
